| QL (quadratus lumborum)-deep muscle in lower back one either side of the spine. It extends from the lowest rib to the top of the pelvis. The QL helps stabilize the spine and pelvis, and allows for back extension, lateral flexion, hip hiking, and forced exhalation. Use the "raise leg test": ask patient to stand up, put both hands on the ilial crest in the back. As patient to lift one leg, then the other. If the QL is weak on the left, you should see the right thumb drop.
