Diagnosis
Tongue: red body with white or slightly yellow coating      Pulse: thin, rapid    Other: 
Patterns: Yin Deficiency Heat 
Indications: Water retention + Heat in lower Jiao; Water retention and heat blocks qi transforming: urinary difficulty; Heat burns yin fluid: fever, thirst with desire to drink; Heat disturbs heart shen: restlessness, insomnia; water pathogen : cough, nausea, diarrhea; T: red tongue body with white or slight yellow tongue coating; • P: thin rapid
Contraindications: severe heat, thirst, or excessive sweating

Commentary: For Yin deficiency thirst and want to drink water, but can not satisfy thirst. Often seen with breast cancer patients after radiation and lymph edema, or harmonal imbalance. Hot flashes and swelling. Different from Wu Ling San in that it works with Yin Deficiency Heat. Hua Shi clears heat. E Jiao nourish Yin blood. This is not a heat clearing formula. It can not be used for excessive heat. Wu Ling San and Zhu Ling Tang are commonly used for water retention. Both focus on water retention symptoms. Wu Ling San is for Yang Qi Deficiency while Zhu Ling Tang is for Yin Deficiency Heat. [Song]• Obvious heat causing Yin deficiency. [Kim]

E Jiao: SP/ST deficiency • Phlegm dampness • Diarrhea from cloying herbs
