Patterns
blood deficiency, yin fails to hold yang leading to yang floating
Comment
This formula's goal is to prevent loss of Qi and focusing Qi inward to generate Blood. Dang Gui is washed with wine. This treats Blood xu from massive blood loss (ie postpartum) which leads to the detachment of Qi and Blood. Blood is the car while Qi is the driver. Yin fails to hold the yang and therefore yang floats upwards leading to fever and sweating. The symptoms are similar for Bai Hu Tang except Bai Hu Tang is for excess heat. This is for deficiency heat. Use Huang Qi instead of Ren Shen because we are loosing Qi at the surface and Huang Qi goes to the surface. [Song].
CC

Chronic cough with LU deficiency consuming Qi and Yin, dry throat and mouth, fatigue, short of breath, non-productive cough or with little phlegm, cough with sweating, weak thin pulse. For heaving exertion like climbing a high mountain, Ren Shen should still be used.
Patterns
Summer Heat, Qi Deficiency, Yin Deficiency
Comment
Often used as a summertime daily beverage. Nowadays, this formula is used in IVs in the hospitals for emergency use in China. For Summer Heat issues, it would be more appropriate to substitute Ren Shen with Xi Yang Shen because it's cooling.

qi, transform into fire and flam upward – Yin fire [Song]
Patterns
Qi Deficiency, SP Qi Deficiency with Qi Sinking, Yin Fire
Comment
Does not have to have dampness; Yin fire from Qi defficiency. It is not Yin deficiency. Can not use herbs from clear heat category. Cold bitter herbs will weaken the yang Qi further. Sweet warm herbs to eliminate great heat (heat generated by Qi deficiency). This formula is best when there is no dampness signs. If there is dampness, then consider using Shen Ling Bai Zhu San.

Ren Shen tonifies (add to skill set) all types of Qi. Can replace Ren Shen with Dang Shen (less potent). Bai Zhu invigorates (inspires) Qi and dries dampness. Fu Ling drains dampness. Gan Cao harmonizes. • YI GONG SAN: a pediatric formula. Tonify Qi, strengthen SP, move Qi. Very gentle. For SP/ST Qi Xu and Yu, loose stool, poor appetite, epigastric discomfort. Middle Jiao Qi Xu. • LIU JUN ZI TANG: tonify Qi, strengthen SP, resolve Phlegm. SP/ST Qi Xu + Phlegm, poor appetite, loose stools, vomiting, epigastric discomfort. Usually more suitable than Si Jun Zi Tang. Same as Si Jun Zi Tang + Er Chen Tang • XIANG SHA LIU JUN ZI TANG: SP/ST Qi Xu + Phlegm + Qi Stagnation. Tonify Qi, strengthen SP, resolve phlegm, move Qi.
